Description:	Hand held camera and reading device with large print and speech output
Purpose:	This device can be used as a portable camera for scanning and reading text or as a fixed CCTV on a stand as an electronic video magnifier. Useful for those with reading difficulties as well as considerable visual impairments.
Features:	The Intel Reader is a small camera device with optical character recognition. Once a picture of text has been taken it is possible to have it read back by a male or female voice. The voices take a bit of getting used to but speed and pitch can be changed. All menus are read aloud, actions have sounds linked to them and the text viewed on the small screen (4.3") can be enlarged or enhanced with colour changes. It is possible to scroll through text and files that are saved on the device. There is a computer USB connection and a mouse connector for alternative control. The Intel Reader will play MP3/WAV files, DAISY books and text transferred from a computer. It can also save text scanned as MP3 to be played on most portable digital music devices. There is over 2 GB of storage space for around 600 pages text that been captured and scanned or over 500,000 pages of text only documents. The carry case for the stand is relatively easy to set up and once the camera is slotted in place large books and magazines can be scanned and read aloud. Obviously contrast levels of print affect the optical character recognition but when testing the device it was remarkably successful with some weird fonts and columns. The stand costs £292.58 and is worth having as part of the set up when scanning long texts or wide magazines.
