Joe's review of SuperNova 11.50 with comments related to its use on Windows XP.

This is the latest version of the Dolphin screen reader and magnification software.

This review has been sent by Joe - we do not normally add personal product reviews to our news but we felt this may help some users and are very grateful to Joe and for his suggestions for useful web sites for those with visual impairments, such as http://www.whitestick.co.uk/ and http://www.zonebbs.com/ for games.

"Supernova 11.50 Review:

In this review I will be concentrating on the speech side of Supernova because I would say I am more of a speech user than a magnification user. I have also heard that Supernova 11.50 is now much more accessible with Windows 7. However as I use Windows XP, I can not comment on these improvements personally in this review. I would however be interested in using Windows 7 with Supernova, just to see what it is like before I upgrade from XP.

When I first tried Supernova 11.5 I was very impressed with the new features that it had. These changes mean that using certain programmes such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, and Windows Live Messenger is easier.

One of the programs I use regularly is Windows Live Messenger. Before version 11.50, I was often frustrated while using this because I was not able to read the messages my friends sent to me. Now thanks to the changes in Supernova I can now read the conversation boxes with ease.

I also use Winamp often. I am very pleased with how Supernova now reads Winamp windows. I particularly like how it reads the Winamp equaliser and I think it navigates the play list editor extremely well. One of my favourite features is, that it reads out what bit rate a track is in - you do this by just one keystroke - by pressing numpad 2.

I think Microsoft Office 2007 works very well with the new version. Although it definitely takes a while to get used to the office 2007 layout and the few new keystrokes that are needed. One of the new features for Microsoft Word is a whole range of Dolphin keyboard shortcuts. For example pressing the Dolphin key plus the letter T means it will take you to a table in a Word document, if one is present. I feel these shortcuts will prove to be very useful.

The new Dolphin help pages within Office are ideal for beginners, they explain how to do tasks step by step. You can get to them with caps lock plus F1.

I would say that version 11.50 is definitely worth buying or upgrading to, it works very well on my Samsung NC10 netbook which runs Windows XP.
